Royal Canin vs. Blue Buffalo for pugs

We will start off with an important question – what are the factors you consider when you are selecting food for your dog? Is packaging important to you, or do you check the ingredients first? Maybe, you might be among the people that stick to what you know and only buy from brands you trust.

When it comes to dog food (or any animal feed in general), it can be quite confusing picking something that works, especially when you are unsure. There are so many brands claiming to be the best at what they offer, but this makes it difficult to know the best choice to make.

In this article, we will compare two well-known brands, Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo, and see which is better – especially if you own a pug.

Royal Canin

History

Going back to 1968, the company was established by a French veterinary surgeon, and the aim was to cater to dog breeders and give them solutions for health issues in their dogs, such as coat and skin conditions. As the company started to show signs of rapid growth, the owner sold it in 1972 to the Guyomarc’h Group of companies.

The research on the product expanded, and eventually was bought in 1990 by the Paribas Bank, and eventually Mars Incorporated bought it and took the task of production and selling. The current owners have other dog food brands as well, such as Nutro and Pedigree, while Royal Canin has 12 production factories spread out in more than 10 countries.

The brand itself invests a lot into studying the organs and digestive system of dogs, including how they burn their food for energy – and this also makes them deliver the perfect choice for various breeds. All the dogs are treated as distinct animals that need their own calories, protein and mineral requirements, which make the brand among the first ones to offer specialized food for large breeds.

Blue Buffalo

History

The explanation of this brand lies in its beginnings, back in 2003. When their family dog started having health issues, Bill and Jackie Bishop decided to help the dog recover its health in a natural way by feeding it with high-quality, natural food. Unfortunately, they could not find such foods in the market, so they decided to make their own – and it helped their dog live for another ten years.

The major aim they go for is treating your dog as a member of your family, so you make an effort to raise it well and feed it as you would your own family. The brand specializes in different categories, such as Natural Veterinary Diet, Life Protection Formula, and Wilderness.

What are their approaches?

The two brands approach dog nutrition in different ways, as the Blue Buffalo approach is natural-based while the Royal Canin approach is more scientific.

Both have offerings of wet and dry food, and also incorporate dog treats in their product selection. However, there are some differences, which include:

Ingredients

Blue Buffalo uses all-natural ingredients, although their products contain traces of controversial components (seemingly). The good news is that they stay away from grains and soy as fillers, instead relying on gluten-free formulas, and eliminating preservatives, colors and artificial flavors.

On the other hand, Royal Canin focuses more on the finished products, and will tell you what the product delivers instead of what it has. The ingredient list features plenty of meat, as well as grains, although this is not in dangerous quantities, and they also have traces of controversial ingredients.

Protein content

Protein is essential in the diet of a dog, and they can develop severe health conditions when deprived of it. However, they also need it in specified limits, or else it becomes harmful to them.

Out of the two, Blue Buffalo has more protein by about 2.2%, with the wet foods having higher protein levels than the dry foods. Even though the difference is not much, you still need to offer it to your dog with caution – especially if the dog already suffers from some conditions like kidney disease or obesity.

Fats

These serve a vital role of ensuring normal functioning and development of pugs and other dogs. Both brands have the same fat content in their food, although the wet foods of Blue Buffalo have more fat by about 9.36%.

Omega-6

This is needed for cell function and membrane structure, and improve the skin and coat health as well as immunity. Royal Canin has 0.48% while Blue Buffalo has 2.4%.

Fiber

This is not as essential, but goes a long way to improving the colon health of your dog. The differences between the two brands are not major either. Royal Canin has 3.2%, while Blue Buffalo has 5%, a difference of only 2.66%.

Final thoughts

Before making a choice on what to buy between the two, it is best to visit your vet and get some advice from them on the better pick. However, on a general level, the Blue Buffalo is a better pick due to more natural ingredients and better nutritional value in the long term.
